Question

My baby was born six days ago, and there might be an infection at the umbilical cord area. How should I handle it?

Answer

Umbilical inflammation is an acute Cellulitis of the umbilical surrounding tissue. If the infection worsens, it may evolve into a complex abdominal Cellulitis, or progress to umbilical abscess, accompanied by peritonitis and sepsis. If the fetus is infected, pus may appear at the umbilical cord area, and treatment with disinfection should be started as soon as possible. Additionally, anti-inflammatory treatment should be administered daily until the umbilical cord falls off. Also, it’s important to regularly clean other parts of the body, as infants have a fast metabolism.
