Question

Dear Doctor: Hello! My child is over 3 years old, and recently I’ve noticed that she has a bowel movement every three or more days, and the stool is in a pearl-like shape. It’s quite difficult for her. I’m not sure what’s causing this. How can I solve and prevent this? I am very grateful for your help!!!

Answer

It’s hot. Children are prone to heat and dehydration. This often leads to constipation. Pay attention to giving your child plenty of water (drinks like Wahaha and fruit juices are not suitable. They don’t hydrate; instead, they digest them and waste the body’s water). When eating, be careful not to consume things that easily cause heat (hot fruits and biscuits, popcorn, etc.). Currently, you can give your child more water to relieve constipation. If your child doesn’t usually have constipation issues, just ensure proper hydration will suffice.
