Question
The back of my child’s head is visibly swollen after birth, and the doctor diagnosed it as a cephalhematoma, soft and somewhat resembling fluid. How is this different from a blood clot? How should it be treated?
Answer
A tumor is a swelling of subcutaneous tissue caused by pressure during the birthing process, which usually subsides gradually over a few days; whereas a blood clot may gradually appear swollen after birth, possibly with some slight movement within, and its severity can be understood through testing. Small blood clots may self-absorb and recover.
