Question
The baby has been breastfed for 7 days and has not had a bowel movement, but frequently farts without odor. They have a bowel movement when using an enema, and the stool is not dry. Should I be concerned?
Answer
Hello. Some babies only have a bowel movement once a week, which is known as “retention.” As long as the baby does not show any abnormal signs such as fever, vomiting, abdominal swelling, intellectual impairment, or malnutrition, there is usually no need to worry. If the baby shows any other abnormalities, please go to the hospital for an examination of infection and have a colorectal color Doppler ultrasound to rule out other issues. Please be cautious about contacting people with colds to avoid transmitting the cold to the baby. During breastfeeding, the mother should avoid eating oily, spicy, and stimulating food . If you feel that the baby has stool but cannot pass it, consider having a colorectal color Doppler ultrasound to determine if there are any other issues.
