Question

How should I deal with my child’s hard stool?

Answer

From around 3 months old, children typically defecate 3 to 6 times a day (with sticky stool), and after 5 months, they defecate 2 to 3 times a day (in a ribbon-like shape). By 6 months, they start to defecate almost daily (in a ribbon-like shape, but very hard, sometimes granular). What should I do when the stool is too hard?

  1. Insufficient intake of food: Increase the child’s food intake to ensure enough digestive residue is produced.
  2. Insufficient sugar intake in diet: Increase the sugar content in the milk to help maintain the moistness of the stool.
  3. Malnutrition: Ensure the child receives adequate nutrition, including the healthy development of abdominal and intestinal muscles.
  4. Inappropriate food composition: Pay attention to the combination of food ingredients, avoiding excessive protein intake without enough carbohydrates, and excessive intake of casein. These factors may lead to constipation issues.
