Question
How to handle the situation of continuous hiccups?
Answer
When a newborn is hiccuping, you can use toys or play soft music to distract their attention, reducing the frequency of hiccups. Newborn hiccups are usually benign and self-limiting, unlike in adults which can be uncomfortable. Hiccups often resolve themselves within a short period of time. Of course, prevention is the key to preventing newborn hiccups. You shouldn’t feed them when they are crying or upset. Maintain proper posture and position while breastfeeding, especially for breastfed newborns. If breast milk is abundant, avoid milk flowing too quickly during feeding. For bottle-fed infants, also avoid eating too fast, too cold, or too hot. Sucking and swallowing food should be slow and steady.
