Question

My baby is 2 months old and has loose stool that’s a bit green. Is it due to being startled? What medicine should I give? Does it matter if my baby sleeps on its side?

Answer

Hello, babies have different ages, diets, and bowel habits, so their stool frequency can vary each day. The type of baby feeding and method also differ, leading to varying stool characteristics. Normal stool for breastfed infants is usually yellow or golden yellow in appearance, with a uniform paste-like consistency, a sweet-sour smell but not smelly, and no obvious mucus. Occasionally, there may be granular milk residue or a slight green tint. They may have stool 3-5 times a day, and some infants may have up to 6-7 times a day, but the amount each time is not much, and the consistency is good, with normal weight gain and good nutritional status. This is not a disease and does not require any treatment. If the baby’s stool frequency changes from 1-2 times a day to 5-6 times or more, and it contains more water or undigested food residue, you should take the baby to the hospital for a consultation.
