Question
The baby always hiccups after eating milk, and it lasts longer than adults’. The baby doesn’t want to drink water. What should I do? What are the factors causing newborn hiccups and the treatment methods?
Answer
Newborn hiccups are a normal phenomenon caused by accidental overfeeding and inhalation of cold air. External stimulation of the diaphragm leads to its sudden contraction, resulting in hiccups. Feeding breast milk or giving warm water can relax the diaphragm and stop the hiccups, as well as gently patting the baby’s back after feeding.
