Question

My daughter has thin hair, with a circle of no hair around her head. My mother-in-law says it’s baby bald spots. What causes this?

Answer

Baby bald spots are caused by physiological reasons. Since babies spend most of their time lying down, if the pillow is not breathable, and combined with the fast metabolism of the baby, the area where the head touches the pillow is prone to heat and sweating, which can cause itching on the scalp. Newborns cannot scratch with their hands and cannot express their itching through words, so babies usually shake their heads from side to side to alleviate the itching on the back of their heads caused by sweating. Doing this frequently can lead to bald spots.
