Question

A child suddenly develops diarrhea, with more than ten episodes per day. After diagnosis, it is found to be infected with rotavirus. How should it be handled?

Answer

Rotavirus infection in children can lead to varying degrees of diarrhea. Typically, the disease has an acute onset and severe symptoms. Clinically, the treatment methods can be divided into mild and severe diarrhea. For mild diarrhea, although the child may have increased bowel movements and fever, their mental state remains good, and there are no obvious signs of dehydration. At this point, it is recommended to adjust the diet, provide easily digestible foods, reduce feeding frequency and quantity, and can take rice gruel orally to replenish fluids. Generally, recovery can be expected within 5 to 7 days without the need for special treatment. If severe diarrhea is present, fluid replacement is necessary to improve dehydration symptoms.
