Question
My son is 8 years old and has been bedwetting consistently, about once or twice a month. With our busy work schedules, we haven’t paid much attention to it. We haven’t treated it yet, but now that he’s older, he seems to feel shy about it, and it seems to be affecting his personality, making him very self-conscious. I’m not sure how to treat bedwetting in an 8-year-old child?
Answer
Based on the information you provided, it appears to be a sign of enuresis. General treatment plans include educational reinforcement, explanation, elimination of psychological burdens and factors causing emotional unrest. Establish a reasonable daily routine and avoid excessive fatigue. Schedule two hours of daytime sleep and avoid bedwetting during deep sleep at night. In addition to general therapy, auxiliary medication treatment can be added, such as antidepressants.
