Question

After birth, the baby’s skin and hands and feet appear obvious a distinct yellowish color. Upon inquiry, this condition is known as jaundice. It is said that this symptom will naturally fade away, but after five days, the yellow color has not diminished but has deepened. How is neonatal jaundice formed?

Answer

Jaundice, also known as neonatal jaundice, is a common condition in newborns, primarily caused by the breakdown of red blood cells leading to an elevated bilirubin level in the body, which in turn causes the skin to turn yellow. It usually appears two days after birth and gradually subsides after seven days. As it is now on the fifth day, it falls within the normal range. It is recommended to give the baby a moderate amount of glucose water or warm water to help promote the fading of jaundice.
