Question

I just had a baby a week ago, and when I discharged from the hospital three days ago, I noticed the baby’s face was yellowish. They said it was physiological jaundice, not a big deal, and it would fade away after a few days. I want to inquire about how long it takes for the baby’s physiological jaundice to disappear?

Answer

Baby Bao was born with physiological jaundice. It usually appears within 2-3 days after birth. It reaches its peak between 4-6 days. It begins to fade between 7-10 days. Apart from decreased appetite, it has a minimal impact on the baby. If jaundice appears within 24 hours after birth and does not fade or recur within 3 weeks, it will be considered pathological jaundice. Physiological jaundice is simply a temporary jaundice caused by the production of bilirubin due to Kernicterus, which appears within 2-3 days after birth, reaches its peak between 4-6 days, and fades between 7-10 days. Premature infants may experience it for a longer duration. Apart from mild decreased appetite, there are no other clinical symptoms.
