Question

Dear Parent, my son is just over 5 months old and has just started saying that his throat is sore. I noticed that his voice is a bit hoarse when he speaks, and he has a persistent fever. How should I treat my child’s sore throat and fever?

Answer

If a child has tonsillitis, first-line treatment can include symptomatic antibiotic medications. For regional treatment, laser therapy or medication irrigation is recommended. For children with pronounced sore throat symptoms, analgesic medication can be administered. Children with fever can take antipyretic drugs. In severe cases, it is advisable to seek medical attention as soon as possible. If a child frequently suffers from tonsillitis, surgery may be an option. Parents should also ensure the child is kept warm to prevent colds and flu from causing a recurrence of tonsillitis.
