Question

My child is a 9-year-old boy. He just started saying he has a sore throat, and it seems he has difficulty swallowing. He also has a bit of a fever and is not very energetic. How should we treat the discomfort caused by infant and toddler tonsillitis?

Answer

If your child has tonsillitis, you can first use some targeted antibiotic medication, or consider regional rinsing or spraying, and injections of symptomatic drugs into the tonsils can also be an option; these treatments are generally effective. If the main symptom is throat pain, you might consider giving some painkillers. If there’s a fever, choose a cooling method based on the body temperature; for temperatures below 38.5 degrees Celsius, physical cooling can be used, while oral fever-reducing medication is recommended for temperatures above 38.5 degrees Celsius. These methods are among the commonly used treatments for tonsillitis. Additionally, surgery is also a viable option for children with recurrent episodes. During treatment, it’s important to maintain good diet and hygiene as well as ensure adequate rest time.
