Question
My daughter is only 4 months old and she feels a sore throat when she talks, with coughing and fever. How should we treat infant and toddler tonsillitis?
Answer
Treatment generally involves the use of anti-inflammatory medications for the child. In severe cases, regional treatments such as cleaning the tonsillar crypts or injecting medications may be considered. Painkillers can be administered based on the situation, especially when the throat pain is severe. If there is a fever, cooling measures should be taken according to body temperature; below 38.5 degrees Celsius, physical cooling can be used, while oral fever-reducing medication can be taken for temperatures above 38.5 degrees Celsius. Tonsillitis often has a tendency to recur, and in such cases, surgery may be considered. During treatment, it is advisable to eat a light diet and consume mainly liquid foods.
