Question
A 12-year-old boy, in elementary school, has recently started experiencing a sore throat, severe cough, and high fever. How should a child’s tonsillitis be treated?
Answer
Currently, the primary treatment for a child’s tonsillitis involves the use of antibiotic medications, selecting drugs sensitive to the bacteria based on culture results, which are effective. Additionally, regional sprays or laser therapy can also be used. If the throat pain is severe, painkillers may be considered to alleviate symptoms. If there is a fever, cooling methods should be chosen based on body temperature; for temperatures below 38.5 degrees Celsius, physical cooling methods can be adopted, while above 38.5 degrees Celsius, oral antipyretics are recommended. Besides these methods, surgery is also a viable treatment option for children with recurrent episodes. During the treatment process, it is suggested to provide light meals and enhance nutritional supplementation to aid in a quicker recovery.
