Question

My preterm baby is now two months old. The baby’s jaundice was 19.5 before medication, which dropped to 10.5. Half a month later, when rechecked, it rose to 12.8. How can we alleviate recurring jaundice in newborns?

Answer

If the baby is currently breastfed, consider it as breastmilk jaundice. Encourage the baby to breastfeed more often and have more bowel movements. Alternatively, you can stop breastfeeding for 3 to 5 days and give the baby formula milk, while also monitoring the baby’s condition at the hospital. If the jaundice is only mild, it is likely breastmilk jaundice. Therefore, continue to focus on breastfeeding and give the baby the two medications I mentioned. Increase daily exercise to enhance the patient’s immunity and prevent recurrence.
