Question
Female, 31 years old, her baby was born recently and she found out that the baby has jaundice. How should jaundice in a newborn baby born half a month ago be treated?
Answer
Mild cases usually fade away within 2 to 3 days, with the skin color returning to normal by the 5th to 6th day; severe cases may have jaundice spreading all over the body, from the head to the feet, with vomiting and cerebrospinal fluid also turning yellow for more than a week. Especially for some premature infants, it can last up to 4 weeks, with the stool still yellowish and no bilirubin in the urine. It requires careful observation, and blue light therapy may be necessary. Regular check-ups are recommended, and generally, it will fade away on its own within a month.
