Question

A 20-year-old male has been experiencing discomfort in his body gradually, and he doesn’t know what’s wrong. He lacks energy. Can you tell me if optic nerve atrophy can be cured?

Answer

Edema and inflammation of the retinal ganglion cells in the fundus can lead to optic nerve atrophy, along with conditions such as eye trauma, glaucoma, tumor compression, and increased intracranial pressure. Clinical manifestations include a decrease in vision, and in severe cases, it can lead to deafness. Optic nerve cells are a type of cell that cannot be regenerated, so once optic nerve atrophy occurs, the additional functions are lost. This loss of vision is irreversible, and there is currently no effective method in clinical diagnosis to alleviate optic nerve atrophy. B vitamins or growth factors can be used to maintain existing vision.
