Question

Our baby suddenly started bleeding from the nose yesterday, and we didn’t notice any signs or symptoms beforehand. What should we do if a child has a nosebleed during a cold?

Answer

The sudden nosebleed in a child during a cold might be due to severe nasal congestion caused by the cold or dryness leading to a broken skin in the nostrils. It’s best to immediately press on both sides of the nostrils with your thumb and index finger simultaneously to stop the bleeding. After about five minutes, release your fingers to observe if further treatment is needed. If bleeding continues, reapply pressure for another five to ten minutes. In most cases, applying pressure can stop the bleeding, but if it persists, seek immediate medical attention from the emergency department. During treatment, patients should pay attention to their diet, maintain a regular sleep schedule, actively participate in physical exercise, regulate their physical and mental health, and maintain personal hygiene to avoid bacterial infections due to weakened immunity.
