Question

A 27-year-old woman feels unwell and has a fibroadenoma in her breast. What should she do? Does she need surgery?

Answer

Generally, it is recommended to surgically remove fibroadenomas that are larger than 2 centimeters. If the size is less than 2 centimeters and surgery is not considered, regular observation can be done with breast ultrasounds every six months. If the fibroadenoma has already grown larger than 2 centimeters, it is suggested to undergo surgery. A fibroadenoma that is 1.6 centimeters in size is not considered large. If surgery is not considered, it can be closely monitored first, and then decide on surgery as it grows slightly larger. Patients should develop good living habits, maintain regular schedules, quit smoking and drinking, increase physical activity to boost immunity, and avoid recurrence of the disease.
