Question

What Causes Diabetic Retinopathy?

Answer

Diabetic retinopathy is one of the chronic complications of diabetes caused by microvascular changes in the eyes. The main symptoms include early retinal arteriolar dilation and microaneurysms, which can later lead to retinal hemorrhages, swelling, microthrombi, and exudates. If left untreated for a long period, it may result in the formation of new blood vessels, triggering anterior vitreous hemorrhage and retinal detachment, ultimately leading to blindness.
